A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, many entries missing, no photos with the streets, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and only 486 of the 1855 articles, A to J and part through K, entered so far, so many links going nowhere.

I've heard that a company that uses its owner's name is more trustworthy because they've put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every streeet in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Opened on 2011-08-20, commemorating the day in 1991 when the Republic of Estonia’s independence was decided and restored, now a national holiday: Taasiseseisvumispäev (Day of Restoration of Independence). Place-name (väljak), not street-name, covering essentially the same plot as Harjumägi, and not easy to tease the two apart (this is the superstructure on top of the hill). NB: not to be confused with Independence Day (Eesti Vabariigi aastapäev or Eesti iseseisvuspäev), which was 1918-02-24.

One month and five days after the Red Army paid its respects to Estonia on 16th June 1940, the state was offered preferred Soviet neighbor status, and elected, navy-style (lots of rigging), to open shop as the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. Name given to Mustakivi from 1980-1989.

Temporary naming of Vabaduse puiestee from 1940-1941, celebrating the glorious (please note the sound of sarcastic keystrokes) date of Estonia’s full military occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940.
