Names
Kvartsliiva (Kvartsliiv)
Monomeric quartz sand, after local factory of same name. Part of a sand and concrete materials group, see Räniliiva.
Laagna (Laagna)
Named for another, older, appellation of Lasnamäe, as used in Canto II or the Second Tale of Kalevipoeg referring to Linda’s tears mis kui Ülemiste järve (as Ülemiste Lake) Laagna mäe peal laenetamas (shimmering on Lasnamägi). Also small town close to Narva on the Russian border. Initially named as Oktoobri prospekt (1977-1985), followed by Oktoobri tee (1986-1992) after which it acquired its present name. The Sub-district itself is understandably quite Kalevifiliphilic, featuring streets such as Kalevipoja itself, as well as Lindakivi, Saarepiiga and others.
Laagri (Laager)
Camp. Laagri is both a town outside Tallinn and, due to growth, a Sub-district of Nõmme, and hence part of Tallinn (see Kaali). After the one-time POW camps set up during WWI and the Eesti Vabadussöja, or Estonian War of Independence (1918-1920), although a village already existed on the site. As the old Soviet-epoch joke went: Vabaduse puiestee viib L/laagrisse: Freedom avenue leads straight to the camp... Laagri has the highest proportion of avenues in town: 3/4 of its roads and 1/4 of all Tallinn’s, clarifying the underlying meaning of puiestee: (from, probably) puine:puise (wooden) + tee (way) where the genitive ‑se ending switched to -es out of laziness (compare Eng. curate for create and aks for ask).
