A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, a couple of entries still pending, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1889 of the 1891 articles entered, 1 or 2 links may go nowhere.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Names

Kõrgepinge (Kõrgepinge)

High tension, high voltage, near Siire. There are only a couple of hundred yards of actual road, most of this is a bicycle- or footpath, running about 5 km E from Paldiski (opposite Järvekalda) to Astangu then veering NE to Paldiski again (opposite Mustjõe) connecting a variety of others. See Kitsarööpa, Lahepea and Harkumetsa.

Korgi (Kork)

Fuse or circuit breaker, third of the seven electrical streets (see Lambi). More commonly known as kaitsekork or elektrikork. Also means, and more usually, cork, as well as plug, stopper, or even bottle-top... For those wondering, nothing to do with the dog breed ‘corgi’, which comes from Welsh cor (dwarf) and gi (‘lenition’ or ‘soft mutation’ of ci (dog), typical of Welsh consonants at the start of certain words).

Kõrkja (Kõrkjas)

Bulrush, club-rush, deer grass. Member of the Scirpus genus. After the rushes at the ford crossing Pirita river to what seems to be an unnamed island. One can imagine the crowds... Street parallel to another riverine plant, Kalmuse.

Kõrre (Kõrs)

Stalk, straw. Part of a cereal-names street zone. See also Luste.

Kose (Kosk) Symbol designating a Tallinn "Asum", or Sub-district.

Waterfall, rapids, after the same on a bend on the Pirita river.

Kose-Kallaste (Kose-Kaldad [pl.]): Symbol designating a Tallinn "Allasum", or Ward.

Waterfall by the shores, banks, riversides, etc. An odd sub-district (allasum) containing only 3 streets, each one of a different type: Kallaste tänav, Kose tee and Särgava E. allee.
