A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, many entries missing, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1750 of the 1884 articles (A to most of T & Vs included) entered so far, so some 10% of the links go nowhere.

All author earnings of A Rambling Dictionary of Tallinn Street Names to be donated to the foundation or donate here.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Names

Randla

Randla (Randla)

A proper noun designating a place by the beach, as indeed it is. Renamed (1953-1995) as Tšaikovski P. during the Soviet occupation.

Rändrahnu

Rändrahnu (Rändrahn)

Erratic boulder, aka glacial erratic, aka erratic, and known by various names in Estonian too: hiidrahn (giant rock), rändkivi (shorestone, beachstone), suurkivi (big stone), etc. Street named after the numerous erratics on the Pirita shoreline. The largest erratic boulder in Estonia is the Ehalkivi (twilight rock, see Eha) in the sea at Letipea (///scenes.milling.escapes). It has a volume of 930 m3 and weighs 2500 tonnes, but it’s in the water so easier to lift. Said to owe its name to its size concealing the setting sun. The German name for these boulders is Findling (foundling – understandable). For other erratic-themed locations, see Suurekivi.

Ränduri

Ränduri (Rändur)

Given its position alongside the railway: traveler or wayfarer but, for those who don’t buy tickets: vagabond or vagrant. Pilgrims would just use the track as route indicator... Renaming, along with Liikuri, of former Raudtee. The original choice was Relsi, from Relss, a colloquial term for rail, roundly rejected by rancorous railway riparians.
