A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, many entries missing, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1750 of the 1884 articles (A to most of T & Vs included) entered so far, so some 10% of the links go nowhere.

All author earnings of A Rambling Dictionary of Tallinn Street Names to be donated to the foundation or donate here.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Names

Rakise

Rakise (Rakis)

Appliance, apparatus, device. Possibly part of a loose construction-materials group. Looks like a private alley or service road beside a factory or warehouse. See Armatuuri.

Raku

Raku (Rakk)

A street was planned to be created in Nõmme (1997), but no housing was built and the streetname was scrapped in 2014. See Raku allasum.

Raku allasum

Raku allasum (Rakk) Symbol designating a Tallinn "Allasum", or Ward.

1) Cell (organic), bladder, air-bladder (in fish), cell of a beehive, blister; 2) Small wooden pail. Ward (allasum) home to the former Raku Tõukarusloomakasvatus Sovhoos (Soviet state pedigree fur farm) aka Raku Sovhoos on the corner of Valdeku and Viljandi mnt 20 (now AS Balti Karusnahk, in Keila). NB: while kolkhoz workers were called Колхозники (Kolkhozniks), their sovkhoz peers would be работники совхозов (rabotniki sovkhozov) or sovkhoz workers. A street called Raku was planned in Nõmme, but nothing was built, so the name was scrapped. Also name of artificial lake in the northern half of which you can see the Männiku aka Nõmme hiidrahn erratic at ///belonged.shelved.version. Only name set with two anagrams: Karu and Kura. Ward seems to consist in 4 streets: Hõberebase, Karuse, Piibri and Sinirebase.
