A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, a couple of entries still pending, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1889 of the 1891 articles entered, 1 or 2 links may go nowhere.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Hundipea (Hundipea) Symbol designating a Tallinn "Allasum", or Ward.

Wolf’s head. Another Soviet decapitation (see also Hobusepea): the street was renamed Lume, snow (1958-1991), as part of their rewriting Estonian history. Hundipea sadam, the sole port in Karjamaa was renamed as Hüdrograafiasadam or Hydrographic Harbor under Soviet occupation, also known as Kabotaažisadam or Cabotage Harbor.

Hunditubaka (Hunditubakas)

Hawkweed, lit. wolf’s tobacco. Hieracium spp., genus of the Asteraceae family, 2nd largest family of flowers. One of a meadow flower or grass group. See Jaanilille.

Ida (Ida)

East, eastern, easterly. Also oost or ost among sailors. See also Idakaare. Related to idanema, to sprout or germinate, or to the Khanty prefix et-, to appear, rise or advance. See particularly Edela, and Loode.

Idakaare (Idakaar)

East, eastern quarter on the horizon. And while Idakaare tänav, formerly Ida, runs (approx.) WSW-ENE, Idakaare põik, formerly Minnika (1926-1955) after local homeowner Juhan Minnik, runs NNW-SSE. See Läänekaare. If Minnika veski (Minnika mill) in Raplamaa, whose name in 1798 was Münik, apparently an Estonianization of German Mühle (mill), is anything to go by, the present gentleman’s name may have a similar ancestry too, revealing if nothing else the difficulties in detecting the foreign origin of certain Estonian words.
