Known as Johannes Schütz until 1936, a sort of patriotico-anti-fascist ‘kitchen-sink’ poet with socialist leanings and an anti-romantic bent.
Kullamaa (Kullamaa)
Lit. gold or gold-bearing land, ‘Eldorado’, maybe? One-time cul-de-sac off the Kitseküla end (i.e. NE) of Tondi, but once seen elsewhere as a street running through the old Charlottentali tikumanufaktuur (see Charlottentali), the Soviet Union’s then third-greatest match-manufacturing plant. But now – typo, booze, ‘senior moment’? – untrackable… Previously known (1915) as Гольденбекская (Goldenbekskaya), a transliteration of Ger. Goldenbeck, from MLG Goldenbek (gold river/brook), often translated as Kullamaa, a relatively common placename in Estonia.

Black river (actual river, not streetname), formerly known as Swarte beke, black beck, which gives the Sub-district Mustjõe its name. Earlier records include Zipe, another alternative of sīpe, sippe, sype, syppe, syeppe, syepe, siepe and zype (to which Eng. ‘seep’ is related), all meaning wet land or lowland, and a reminder of the location’s wetter nature 600-odd years ago.rict its name, see .
Stroomi (?)
Stroomi Rand, unofficial name of Pelgurand, beach named after an inn called Stroomi kõrts or Stromischer Krug after one-time alderman Bengt Fromhold Strohm (1747?-early 19th C). Interestingly, another Strohm, perhaps his older brother, an iron-merchant called Johan Andreas Strohm (1744-89) is recorded as owning an inn at Tatari 1 in 1786, as well as 4 others in the suburbs. I’m not saying they were related, but I’m not saying they weren’t...
