A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, a couple of entries still pending, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1889 of the 1891 articles entered, 1 or 2 links may go nowhere.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Kursi (Kurss)

Course, shipping route. Next to the harbor, but there’s an ATM there too, so ‘rate of exchange’ is equally valid too. The street looks, maybe incidentally, like it follows an old (1310) water course (Lat. fossa, anything ranging from canal to ‘ditch’) called Schilpesgraven (after a person’s name or perhaps related to mod Ger. schirren or tschilpen, to chirp or twitter like a sparrow?) leading from the moat that forked away from the city at about the same longitude as Oleviste and continued almost due N to the sea.

Kuru (Kuru)

Pass, gorge, defile, flume, couloir, gulch, etc.

Kuslapuu (Kuslapuu)

Honeysuckle, woodbine, Lonicera spp. The name may reflect its northern European habitat preference of spruce forests (see Kuuse), with a shortening of ‘uu’ to ‘u’ and where the ‑la ending may be a contraction of ‘salu’, i.e. spruce-grove ‘tree’ (see Hiiela).

Küti (Kütt)

Hunter, trapper. Originally named Schützenstraße, protect or defence street (1881) and otherwise known as Schießgasse (shooting alley), Стрѣлковая ул. (arrow road, in 1916, hence old spelling, see Intro) or Стрелочная ул (undated, new spelling). Named after rifle-range the military used to practice on. Anagram of Tüki. One of a mini target-practice group. See Noole.
