A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, a couple of entries still pending, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1889 of the 1891 articles entered, 1 or 2 links may go nowhere.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Pilstickeri torn (0) Symbol designating a Point of Interest.

Arrow-maker/arrow-sharpener, from MLG pīl, arrow (German Pfeil, both derived from Latin pilum, a heavy military javelin), and either MLG sticken, to fit with a shaft or, given the root *stick- implying a point, possibly arrow-sharpener. See Pilstickeri trepp, see also Plate torn.

Patkuli

(Dietrich Friedrich Patkul [?-1710])

Aka Dietrich von Friedrich Patkul, Friedrich Diederich Pattküll, etc. Swedish soldier and Vice-governor of Tallinn from 1707-1710. Apparently... Although his infamous and ill-fated relative Johann Reinhold von Patkul (1660-1707) – born in Stockholm prison and broken on the wheel in Poland for his part in the Great Northern War and desire to wrest Livonia from Swedish hands – may well have made him a more covert candidate. Name applies to both the steps (trepp) and the viewing-platform / belvedere (vaateplatvorm) itself on Toompark. See also Pilstickeri torn or trepp.

Mayeri

(Carl August Mayer, 1789-1871?)

Businessman and burgomeister (1860-1864) responsible for converting Harjumägi into a green area in the 1860s. Nearby steps (trepp) named after him. See Patkuli.
