A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, a couple of entries still pending, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1889 of the 1891 articles entered, 1 or 2 links may go nowhere.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Names

Kloostri (Klooster)

Abbey, cloister, monastery, convent. Close to Pirita convent.

Kloostrimetsa (Kloostrimets) Symbol designating a Tallinn "Asum", or Sub-district.

Kloostrivärav (0)

Monastery Gate. At the Junction of Suur-Kloostri and Väike-Kloostri, One of Tallinns many historic gates. Oddly, while much information is available on the towers, threis very little on this... To be continued.

Kõdra (Kõder)

Hull, pod. Not exactly a plant or flower itself, but part of the Mähe flower-name group, see Kõlviku.

Kodu (Kodu)

Home, hearth, dwelling. Kodu armas kodu is of course ‘home sweet home’. After the nearby teachers’ housing scheme, see Õpetajate. Crosses Tare.

Koge (Koge)

Cog (or cog-built ship), ship dating back to 10th C, usually oak, single mast, square sail, common Hansa trading vessel in the Baltic. By the 12th C, its capacious, high-sided design with true rudder made it capable of transporting up to 500 persons, and be used as either cargo or fighting ship. Street associated with Kaljase both lurking in the docks’ primeval ooze awaiting development. In 2022, a 24.5-m long, 9-m broad cog dating back to around 1350 was unearthed under Lootsi 8, between 2 liquor stores, in what there could be called the primeval booze.
