A pile of ro ad signs half-trashed and piled up on a building-site, to indicate the site is in construction.

Website under construction, many entries missing, no photos with the streets yet, layout not finalized...

This started with a book (last few pages under review) and so far 1717 of the 1884 articles (A to most of T & Vs included) entered so far, so some 10% of the links go nowhere.

All author earnings of A Rambling Dictionary of Tallinn Street Names to be donated to the foundation or donate here.

The Website

Not intended at the beginning, the present website is taking on a life of its own, with plans for relevant discussion forums, picture galleries and, over time, more non-streetname entries.

In theory, it will be funded by advertising relevant to people in Tallinn, to be determined.

A percentage of profits (also to be determined) to be donated to the foundation.

Apparently, a company that uses its owner's name is considered more trustworthy because they put themselves on the line.

This is me, in Tallinn this spring (2025), on a 3-month spree to check details, take photos (about 12K), explore (ave. 15K/day), and so on. I think I covered every street in Kesklinn (apart from Mõigu), most of Põhja-Tallinn and some Kristiine.

Starry sky. Close to Noorkuu and Vanakuu.

Tähtpea

Tähtpea (Tähtpea)

Scabious, gipsy rose, mournful widow, flowers all. One of the teasel family (Dipsacaceae), Scabiosa spp., flowers named for their use in treating scabies and other skin disorders, not to be confused with related genera such as Knautia (see Jaanilille). Only one species native to Estonia, the tui-tähtpea (lit. dove-starhead/startop) Yet another foreign street (from next-door Maardu) that slipped in when no-one was looking. Consider it a lexical marketer’s “bogof!”.

Täi

Täi (Täi)

Louse, but often used for flea, etc. Various locations, see also Viru väljak. There used to be a flea market on the corner of Uus and Väike Rannavärav, south of the Katkenud liin (the broken line) monument commemorating the Estonia Ferry disaster of 1994. It was also known as Trödelmarkt, junk/jumble market in 1913, indicated as still there on the Tallinna Linna Plaan 1922 (Tallinn street map) then moved to the location of the current bus terminal between Juhkentali, Odra and Lastekodu, mutating into Vanakraamiturg (lit. old stuff / junk market) until 1939, temporarily Uus Turg, new market (1939), then gracefully segueing into Laadaplats (fairground, 1939-60).
